The Lighting the Way to Guardianship and Other Decision-Making Alternatives project is designed to increase the knowledge of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families about guardianship options in Florida, and to increase the knowledge of attorneys and other professionals about Florida’s disability communities and Florida law pertaining to guardianship and guardianship alternatives.
Lighting the Way was initially funded and work began in October 2008 to accomplish these goals. Learn more about this project by reading the final reports from year 2009 and 2010. The reports are archived and located in the sidebar to the left. A special thank you is given to the organizations that collaborated to make this project a success. Links to these organizations appear on the left sidebar.
In 2011, Lighting the Way is offering six, eight-hour training workshops in three separate locations throughout Florida. The workshops are conducted for two audiences in each location. On Fridays, the participants will consist of attorneys, judges and other professionals. On Saturdays, the participants will consist of self-advocates and family members.
Training workshops will shine light on:
- Guardianship
- Guardian Advocacy
- Decision-Making Options Other than Guardianship
- Special Needs Trusts
- Legal Resources

Welcome Staff of the Florida Department of Children and Family Services, Adult Protective Services. This is a specially designed presentation to address your specific needs regarding the guardianship process and other decision-making alternatives that can be considered prior to guardianship. A live presentation will be held in Tallahassee on Thursday, August 4, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (EST), at the DCF Headquarters Office, 1317 Winewood Blvd., Bldg 1, Room 132. ** VTC broadcast will be utilized to allow for APS and General Counsel staff from around the state to participate in this training*** Pre-registration is required although there is NO FEE to participate in this training. Your email address is required on the registration form so that an electronic version of the course materials can be distributed on August 3rd to participants along with other information that participants will need.

The workshops for attorneys, judges, and other professionals focuses on the protection of rights and serving the needs of person with developmental and acquired disabilities using the most appropriate and least restrictive decision-making options, ranging from making one’s own decisions with assistance (least restrictive) to guardianship under Chapter 744, F.S. (most restrictive).
The workshops are appropriate for attorneys with 0 to 3 years of experience working in the area of guardianship and decision-making assistance. General law and family law practitioners are especially encouraged to attend.

REGISTRATION FEE
The registration fee to attend Friday’s workshop is $165. The fee covers course fee, materials and lunch.
However, because one of the objectives of the Lighting the Way project is to encourage attorneys to provide legal services on a pro bono or reduced fee basis to individuals with disabilities and their families who may need assistance, the registration fee for the workshop will be waived (except for a $30 administrative fee) under the following circumstances, if you:
- complete the Florida Bar’s Low Fee Panel application,
- volunteer with the Center for Guardian Advocacy,
- provide pro bono guardianship legal services,
- are a law student
- are employed by a government entity or legal services organization.
For judges, the entire fee, including the $30 administrative fee, is waived.
All other professionals are required to pay the $165 registration fee.

This program was approved by The Florida Bar for attorneys attending any workshop training on Fridays for the following credits:
- 9.0 CLER
- 2.0 Ethics
- 7.0 Elder Law Certification
(Effective January 1, 2007, an attorney seeking to be appointed by a court for incapacity and guardianship proceedings must have completed a minimum of 8 hours of education in guardianship. Sec. 744.331(2)(d), Florida Statues.)
This program has been approved by CE Broker for 8.0 hours of CEU credit for Professional Guardians attending any workshop training on Fridays. (See CE Broker Tracking #20-268028.)
This program has been approved by CE Broker for 8.0 hours of CEU credit for Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, as well as Marriage and Family Therapists attending any workshop training held on Fridays. (See CE Broker Tracking #20-268028.)
Alachua County ESE Teachers will receive 10 points for attending this training. A one page reflection is required as follow-up to the training. After attending this training, you are to submit the following documentation to Bruce Tomlinson at the Manning Center using the ACPS "Truck Mail”: Certificate of Completion, Agenda, and Reflection.

You should be interested in attending this training if you are:
- A person with a disability,
- Parent of a child with a disability,
- Family member of a person with a disability, or
- Caregiver of a person with a disability
Individuals with disabilities and their families can attend this workshop at no cost. However, each location has limited seating. Financial Assistance is available on a limited basis for travel reimbursements of individuals and families who incur travel costs to attend one of these training workshops. In order to qualify, participants must reside in the state of Florida and have traveled at least fifty (50) miles or more. (See Financial Assistance Guidelines on registration form for specific requirements.) |
